These days, the value of money is so widely accepted we don’t even think about it. But if you’re anything like most people, you probably forget to save for things like retirement, vacations, or even a down payment on a new car. In fact, if you want to save money, here are some things you can do right now to start saving more money every month:

Life is expensive. No matter how difficult you try, money is always tight. Make sure that you aren’t spending more than you make so that you can save money and even plan for the future.

Last month, I wrote a post called “How to Save More Money Every Month”. It was one of the most popular posts I’ve ever written, and I believe there’s something in that post that everyone can learn from. In this post, I’m going to pick up right where I left off with that post, and take you through some of the best strategies for saving more money every month.. While it’s important to focus on increasing your income while paying off debt, building assets, and so on, it’s also important to stay focused on keeping the money you earn. These two concepts go hand in hand. If you’re used to spending money, you may be wondering how you can save more each month.

Because I have vowed never to give up on the idea of saving money and living well at the same time, I have compiled a list of concrete ways to save money in all areas of your life. These tips don’t take much effort or time, and it’s not about saving money. These are REAL ways to save money, and I use them often. So, here we go!

Housing

Everyone knows I am an advocate for affordable housing. I wholeheartedly agree with the financial experts who say you shouldn’t spend more than 30% of your income on housing. I understand that sometimes this is difficult, depending on where you live. This allows you to determine to some extent where you live. Try not to live in a house you can’t afford.

Hire a roommate, stay with friends or family until you get back on your feet and pay them as much as you can, rent an apartment or buy a smaller house. In general : Do what you can to protect yourself from poverty.

If you prefer to live in the city rather than the suburbs or countryside, you will probably pay more for an apartment. Be prepared to pay nothing for parking, nearby amenities, and additional taxes and fees. A relative of mine who lives in Chicago told me that now you can’t even get a free bag of groceries if you shop there. Too bad.

You may not like the city at all, but you just have to live nearby to work. If so, do all of the above and work to build a modest home for yourself while increasing your income and saving in all other areas of your household.

While food is a basic necessity, that doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money on it every month. I know many people struggle with this (myself included), but here are some simple tips I’ve learned that help me save more money at the grocery store without sacrificing a delicious and satisfying meal.

  • Try to shop less often, about two to three times a month.
  • Don’t buy processed food.
  • Cook with fresh, whole ingredients.
  • Learn to love rice and beans, stews and soups, and other dishes that can be cooked in portions in a large pan.
  • Try the meal plan for $5 to better prepare and cook your meals at home instead of ordering them.
  • Make your own desserts instead of buying them. Let cake mixes be your best friend.
  • Shop at discount stores like Aldi, and check out the sale diaries each week to plan the deals you want to take advantage of.
  • Make meals from the freezer in advance for those days when you don’t know what to cook and don’t have time to make meals from scratch.
  • Try comparing meat prices.
  • Buying online ? Use Rakuten to save on all your online purchases.

Entertainment

What is your budget for entertainment? I’ve seen everything from $500 a month to $0 a month impressions Mr. and Mrs. Frugalwoods every month. Mine costs about $50 a month. I combine that with my lunch budget of $60 a month, which comes to about $110 a month for paid entertainment and eating out.

Once you no longer associate fun and entertainment with the need to spend money, you will begin to save. For cheap entertainment, you have to be creative, because you may have to invent your own entertainment or look for free or cheap activities to participate in.

Try to get through the weekend without spending money, but also try to get out and do something your family enjoys.

  • Look for upcoming events you can attend
  • Take your children to the park or library
  • Organize a game night at home for your family and friends.
  • Camp in a state park and bring food for a picnic.

The list is long. If you want to save money on entertainment and do more free or cheap things with your family, it’s important to find out what’s on and plan/call ahead.

You can also download online coupons and take advantage of other promotions, discounts and weekly offers to lower your entertainment costs. One of my favorite ways to do this is Groupon, but you can use any other method.

Jullie kinderen!

Children cost money. We get it. Getting older doesn’t have to be a death sentence for your finances. It is best to teach children gratitude at an early age, focusing on experiences and time spent together rather than objects. Teach them to work for what they want, and that as children they should not compare themselves to their friends or worry about money.

Say no if you must, use second hand clothes and buy second hand, use discount coupons for baby food and other favourite foods and snacks, don’t spend money on expensive things, buy clothes and shoes on sale.

Here are some other things you can do:

  • Ask your doctor for formula if you need it (they usually give whole jars if you ask).
  • Buy clothes on sale and buy them one or two sizes bigger (that means buying summer clothes in the winter to be ready for next summer, and so on).
  • Give older children a pocket money or paycheck. They are therefore responsible for their wishes. Once the money runs out, it runs out.
  • Start Cotton diapers! This method isn’t for everyone, but it can save you a fortune in diapers if you commit to it.
  • Only sign them up for ONE session at a time. This not only saves them time each week, but also money and allows them to focus on one task at a time. If they want to change classes, they can, but it can only be one sport, club, etc. at a time.

Insurance

While it’s not advisable to drop insurance altogether, you can lower your premiums instead of paying hundreds or thousands of extra dollars each year that could be better spent elsewhere. If you have car insurance and rent, building or life insurance, you can try combining the policies to get a discount.

For life insurance, it’s best to get a rate when you’re younger, but younger people have to pay higher rates for car insurance. You can lower the cost of your car insurance if you have a good driving record, drive less, and have a car with special features like anti-theft protection.

When signing a contract with an insurance company, it is important to compare rates and coverage from different providers, ask about their discounts and try to take advantage of them as much as possible. Vraag ook naar premies of voordelen in de tijd om te zien of ze van plan zijn uw premies elk jaar te verlagen of niet.

Other ways to save money on insurance include automatic payment and paying premiums every 12 or 6 months, as most companies offer a discount for fewer payments.

Travel

I’m far from a travel expert, but I’ve learned a thing or two from watching other personal finance bloggers go on vacation or abroad to see the world. The most important thing I learned is that it’s almost free to travel. SAY WHAT?!

If you have a good credit score and know how to redeem credit cards or use certain credit cards to earn rewards and points that can be redeemed for travel, you can get free airline tickets or hotel stays after a few months of regular spending.

The most expensive part of the trip is booking the plane tickets and accommodation. To fly, you have to participate in loyalty programs and look out for the flash sales that airlines organize a few times a year. When it comes to accommodation, skip the expensive hotel and use Airbnb to save on accommodation and enjoy local attractions. Once you’ve cut back on these two major expenses, you can save even more money on your overall trip by choosing to travel off-season, pack light, and avoid travel traps.

Online shops

Online shopping has become the norm in our society. It’s convenient and often cheaper than going to a store to make a purchase. You can still save money when you shop online by signing up for a rewards or cashback program, for example, through which you make your purchases. B. Rakutenor Swagbucks.

You can also shop exclusively on Amazon and take advantage of weekly sales and free two-day shipping when you sign up for Amazon Prime. Cyber Monday is another good day to save money when shopping online. It takes place on the Monday after Black Friday in November in the form of an extensive sale at thousands of online retailers.

Utility bills

Ah, public services… You can pay off all your debts, stop using your credit cards and even pay off your mortgage. At the end of the day, you have to pay bills to live comfortably. Heating and energy bills can be the most frustrating, especially if your home is all-electric.

My main money-saving tip is to leave the air conditioner or heater on for as long as possible during the off-season. In the spring we use fans or ventilate the room by opening the windows when we are comfortable, and in the fall we wear socks and sweaters indoors and keep the heat on for the cold winter months.

If you have a programmable thermostat, you set the temperature in the house and turn it off when you leave for the day. Invest in energy-efficient light bulbs, turn off computers and electronics at night and unplug certain appliances in your home. You can also check your water heater and replace your shower head with a more efficient model, so you don’t have to waste extra water waiting for it to heat up.
