9 Books From Elon Musk’s Reading List That Could Change Your Life

Elon Musk, the billionaire, is a bookworm.

“You know, anytime someone asks Elon how he learned to construct rockets, he responds, ‘I read books,” said Jim Cantrell, a member of SpaceX’s original crew. That is correct. Those novels were eaten by him.

Musk was an avid reader as a youngster, sharing that he grew up reading comic books and the Encyclopedia Brittanica. Musk discussed his love of books, especially biographies, and how much he likes reading on his iPhone when traveling in a 2014 interview with CNN.

These are just a few of the novels Musk has mentioned reading in the past. Musk has discussed several books he appreciates, recommends, and feels improved his life in various interviews throughout the years. Musk is also a regular tweeter, with over 90 million Twitter followers who he suggests books to.

Elon Musk’s reading list includes the following nine titles:

Walter Isaacson’s biography of Benjamin Franklin

Musk said in a 2014 CNN interview that he loves reading biographies, citing The Biography of Benjamin Franklin as “one of my idols.” The thick book details Franklin’s whole life, including his efforts to establish the United States of America.

Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Musk said in a January 2013 interview that he has read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. “It underlined an essential point,” he said of the book, “which is that the question is sometimes tougher than the solution.” And if you can ask the question correctly, the answer will be simple. He mentioned the book again in a later Clubhouse interview, adding, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a book of philosophy masquerading as a stupid comedy book.”

J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings

“The protagonists of the novels I read, The Lord of the Rings and the Foundation series, always felt a responsibility to rescue the world,” Musk remarked in an interview with the New Yorker. He was bullied often as a little child, and he found solace in these novels.

Nick Bostrom’s book Superintelligence

On August 2, 2014, Musk tweeted his recommendation for Nick Bostrom’s book Superintelligence. He tweeted, “Worth reading Superintelligence by Bostrom. We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes.”

When Elon Musk tweets, the whole world pays attention. He’s spoken about how the books he reads influence his life choices and routes.

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Series

Musk highlighted how Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series motivated him to construct and launch rockets in a 2013 interview with the Guardian (Musk founded Spacex in 2002). “It’s a futuristic version of Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,” he thought of this science-fiction story. Assume you’re at the height of the Roman Empire. What would you do, what steps might you take to slow down the deterioration?” He claimed that investing in technology was the solution. This book inspired him to create SpaceX, the company behind the reusable Falcon 9 rocket. “The Foundation series [is] vital to [the] formation of SpaceX,” he tweeted on June 15, 2018, recommending the book once again.

Frank Herbert’s Dune Saga

The Dune Saga is a science fiction and fantasy hybrid. “Dune series by Herbert also amazing,” Musk tweeted in December of 2014. He believes that artificial intelligence should be limited.” Musk has often talked about the perils of AI and artificial intelligence in his capacity as a tech billionaire.

Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot

This two-act drama has been dubbed “one of the most significant plays of our time” by critics. Elon Musk concurs. “Have lately come to appreciate the amazing, absurdist comedy of Waiting for Godot,” Musk tweeted about his admiration for the play. We often wait, unsure of why, when, or where.”

Richard Branson’s Screw Business as Usual

Musk tweeted to author Richard Branson, stating, “Liked Screw Business as Usual a lot.” Everyone should take this attitude to heart since it is the prudent decision.” Musk, a millionaire who has founded a number of successful businesses, takes business advice seriously.

Ian Banks’ Culture Collection

Musk enjoys reading books on machine learning and artificial intelligence. “Reading The Culture series by Banks,” he tweeted in December 2014. A fascinating vision of a big, semi-utopian galactic future. Hopefully, AI will not be too hopeful.”

Finally, there is an Honorable Mention:

Maye Musk’s A Woman Makes a Plan

“My Mom authored a book,” Elon Musk tweeted, promoting his mother’s book. He did not say if he had read his mother’s book, but it must be on his list. Maye Musk offers her guidance, personal stories, and life lessons acquired as a worldwide supermodel in this book.
